Today is my sister’s wedding day, so preparations are about to begin. I put on one of my favorite Dvořák’s albums to put me in the mood. This particular track struck me.
This is actually a lied (german for song,) translated by Richard Stokes as thus:
Leave me alone with my dreams,
Do not disturb the rapture in my heart!
Leave me the bliss, leave me the pain
That fills me, since seeing him.
Leave me alone! Do not banish the peace
In my breast with your loud words!
That I might see and hear him everywhere:
Leave me alone with his brightly lit image.
Do not ask about the magic that fills me;
For you cannot comprehend the bliss
That his love has made me feel,
The love reserved for me alone.
Leave me alone, alone with my burden
Of passionate torment, of blazing ecstasy;
And should this, O my heart, overwhelm you –
It is from your beloved that you have received it!
Leave me alone with my dreams!
He loves me! Leave me the deep peace
That these words bestow; sundered from him,
My soul would perish with longing.
You would think with a title called “Leave Me Alone” and with a melody like that that it would be about a woman asking a man to leave her alone, but no — she’s actually telling the whole world to leave her alone with her feelings of being in love.
Congratulations, Claudia and Marty!
